Capture the Words!

Here's a new game to practice Fry Words 1-200+.  It's a little mixture of Social Studies, a little Math, and a little Reading and WAALA! Actually it came from an adaptation of a game on mathwire.com.

Students just need a game board, 2 sided counters or different colored counters to mark spaces, teacher created dice, and a friend to play.  The dice can be created using wooden or foam cubes.  One die has the letters a-f.  The other die has the numbers 1-6.  Students roll the dice to get a set of coordinates.  They find that spot on the game board and read the word.  If they can read the word correctly, they put one of their markers on the word.  If they do not read the word, their turn is over.  They continue to play until the board is covered or they run out of markers.  Winner has covered the most words.

I created 6 different game boards, each has 36 Fry words.  The words are in order of the Fry list.  Therefore, the first game board is easier to read than the last one.  This way I can differentiate the game for pairs of students.

Whew! Usually my directions/explanations are not this long.

It's already been student tested and approved!  ENJOY!!

Let me know what you think.

Wonderful. Could be added to the word work/spelling center by requiring repeating the spelling, too.
