What Are We Reading Wednesday

Today we are reading Turk and Runt by Lisa Wheeler.

This is a cute story about two turkey brothers trying to save each other from the gloom and doom of the Thanksgiving holiday on the turkey farm.  Runt tries to tell his parents why people are visiting the farm but no one ever listens to Runt. Turk is sure to become part of someone's feast until Runt's antics save him.

Students enjoy this story especially the voices of the farm visitors, the french accent of Madame, the gruff expressions of the football coach, and the shaky voice of the little old lady.

This is a good story to compare and contrast characters in a story, Turk and Runt. Turk is strong, athletic, graceful and not very smart. Runt is small, thin, and smart. They both are turkeys and end up saving each other.

Since Turk and Runt are opposites, it's a good time to practice.

Thank you so much for sharing your creativity. I just found your site and have been sharing it with my friends. I teach Title I reading and Reading Recovery. So much of what we do focuses on relearning and grammar and reading games are a great way to do this!
